Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu

After the noise and chaos of Chennai, the quiet is a welcome change. It’s the kind of quiet inhabited by soft winds, gently gusting to rustle the leaves and ripple the flat surface of the glassy green water. Birds call from trees doubled and mirrored mid-trunk by the water, exploding suddenly into flight for reasons only they know. On the other side of the trail, a deep green rice field hosts a few stray egrets and cows, and a farmer. Monkeys patrol the path, looking for opportunities to rob careless picnickers of their food. Some of our group witnessed a successful sneak-attack from the rear by one monkey while a mother and baby distracted the victim. The robbers made off with a packet of biscuits. I saw white ibis, crane, cormorant, gray pelican, painted pelican, egret, gray heron, and kingfisher. If only I were a photographer equal to the task of documenting the beauty of Vedanthangal. Hopefully I can get some of Robert Galindo’s pictures.
