Namaste.
Tomorrow is the day. I’ve had my shots, I’ve packed my bags. I’ve got my Hindi phrasebook and I’ve started taking my anti-malaria meds. Actually, I just now remembered that I need to start the malaria meds so I’m going to do that very shortly.
Sixteen other Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad participants and I will travel in India for the entire month of July. For security reasons, we’ve been asked not to be too specific about our itinerary ahead of time, but we’ll be in north and south India, in both rural and urban areas. We will visit charities, NGOs (non-governmental organizations), and government ministry projects aimed at Indian development and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. You can follow the group’s progress and read contributions from my fellow Fulbright scholars at fulbrightindia2011.com. This blog will be dedicated to my personal experiences as a traveler and student of Indian culture and development. I’m grateful to Richland College, the Dallas World Affairs Council, and the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD for giving me this opportunity.
In addition to investigating and creating curriculum units about India and the Millennium Development Goals (yes, PEAK and Pre-AP students, expect lessons on this when I come back), I am conducting my own little experiment with diet and nutrition. Specifically: I, steak lover and barbecue fan, will attempt to eat an entirely vegetarian diet for the month of July. Really, given the delicious nature of the Indian vegetarian food I’ve tried, I don’t think it will be that difficult. I may not even lose any weight. But difficult or easy, I’ll report on it here.
Phir milenge!
